Captain Danny Trevathan not sure if Bears will protest Sunday
0

Danny Trevathan knows his friend Brandon Marshall, the Broncos linebacker, thought long about his decision to kneel during the national anthem Thursday night.

He was less sure whether kneeling — in a show of solidarity with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is protesting police brutality against minority groups — was in his own future Sunday against the Texans.

“I’m looking forward to playing,” Trevathan, a captain, said Friday after practice at Halas Hall. “If it’s on my heart and it’s something that I feel strongly about, I have no problem doing it.”

Would his teammates?

“I don’t know,” Trevathan said. “I mean, it’s our game. Whatever they decide, I’m sure they prayed about it and talked about it.”

The Bears inside linebacker, who spent the last four seasons playing for the Broncos, said Marshall’s decision wasn’t made lightly.

“We used to talk a lot; we still do off and on,” he said. “I’m sure he prayed about it and made the right decision for himself.”

Bears coach John Fox — who encourages his players to respect the anthem — said he hasn’t talked to his players about whether they’d protest during the song Sunday.

I've been wondering about this. I hope I don't have to add the Chicago Bears to the growing list of actors and musicians I won't pay to see because they insist on shoving their politics down their audience's throat. I'm simply not going to watch a team that allows its players to show such disrespect to our country. For me, it's that simple.

Tomorrow is 9/11. I haven't thought about this date as much in recent years as I have the last few days. Yes, I'm a football fan, and yes I am one of the millions of Americans that provide these football players with the platform they are so blessed to have. Please don't misunderstand that last sentence. I fully recognize everything each of those athletes has accomplished on their own. Their success is entirely their own. However my dollars as a fan go into the NFL and provide these athletes with the platform they have obtained through hard work and sacrifice. Tomorrow, we as Americans pause to reflect on the events of 9/11. Many Americans can picture the moment they learned passenger planes were crashing into the World Trade Center. I was in college, and had been out the night before doing what college kids do. I was convinced my roommate was being a punk by screaming at me to get out of bed and come see what was on the TV. I can still remember everything about that moment. The smell of the room, the the warm cup of coffee in my hand as I stared dumb struck at the TV and wondered just how much this moment would impact my life.

Truth is that as an American, I still live one of the most privileged lives available to a human. That has nothing to do with my skin color, or my income bracket. We, as American's have so much we take for granted. I've seen the difference in the eyes of those outside our borders. I've held the child that will never know the comforts my children think they are entitled to simply by being born. Many American's live hard lives. I'm not going to deny that. And we have our issues. We are a work in progress, and we often get it all wrong. Yes. Racism exists. Yes. Homeless go hungry. And yes we can do a better job of continuing our trend of elevating the quality of life for all American's.

We do that by coming together. We do that by refusing to give those who would keep us divided and hungry positions of power and recognition. We do that not by dishonoring our Flag, and law keepers. But by coming together around what has tied us together for the last 240 years. We keep trying to be better. We keep trying to provide freedom for all American's. We keep striving to be the example of what a civilized respectful society looks like. And we refuse to compromise our values when the corrupt try to buy our souls.

In 2016 I honestly have never been less proud of the direction my nation is heading. Without getting into politics, this election cycle is nothing short of a stain on our history. Our cops look more like soldiers than civil servants, and every day I see examples of racial tension that we honestly have come too far as a people to still be dealing with. But we are better than this. We aren't perfect, and we have much to learn from people with far less then we have. But we will never fix that by disrespecting our flag, our nation, and the values so many generations have fought to provide today's children with. So I beg my fellow American's. I beg these football players. And I beg you, to stand together tomorrow. To respect our strengths, honor our hero's and demand nothing less then our best from each other. Don't tear us down. Don't be the movement that leads us to conflict and divisiveness.

On 9/11/2001 I witnessed the very best in American's as we pulled together to save lives, and honor our fallen. May we never forget that experience.

Its OK, Obama is on another world apology tour apologizing for our laziness and racism . You know its bad when our own president is personally broadcasting to the world our what he believes to be our shortcomings as Americans.

Well Bill we have something in common here, I'am totally with you on this one. My feelings are for any of these dipshits doing their little protests which by the way are mostly based on lies is get the fuck out of our country go wherever it is you think is so much better or shut the fuck up and quit making excuses for life when it doesn't go your way. P.S good piece Galad

Taking a knee during the National Anthem, while their Constitutional right, is childish.  It is the wrong platform entirely for making any social statement. To do it during any Pro Sport venue is just wrong. Pro Sports has been the most significant racial equalizer in American history. IMO

If these young Millionaires want to promote change in Society, they should do it, through their ability to affect change in their own communities. This is becoming another meaningless gesture as more and more add their own "look at me" copycat moments.

What these players are doing by protesting the national anthem is not illegal, but I do find it disrespectful. All this is doing is opening up a whole new can of worms, while solving NOTHING.  With today being 9/11, I hope every player has enough respect to pay tribute not only to the brave men and women who sacrifice their own lives for this country, but for the people who lost their lives on this date 15 years ago. What happened on this date 15 years ago is much bigger than a ridiculous protest over something stupid.

I think the owners of these teams that have players that wont show respect for our National Anthem should grow a ball and tell those players that when they wear that uniform, they are representing that team and being paid by that team and as employees of that team they are required to stand during the playing of the Anthem. Make it a " company policy" so to speak.
