FA, Trades, And The Draft
1

It's that time of year again.  Nothing to do but dream and wonder what next season might look like.  Several QBs are slotted to go in the first round this year setting the Bears up to trade back if they want......

The Chicago Bears could find a lot of potential suitors for the eighth overall pick in this year's draft.

I'm really hoping a few QBs catch teams GM eyes......that way the Bears could trade back and pick up extra draft picks.

The Vikings used this same sinario to vastly improve their roster three seasons ago, and look where it almost got them this season, a game short of the super bowl!

I am hoping the Bears just draft well and do not try to be the smartest guys in the room during the draft. Just get the best player available and get this rebuild done sooner rather than later. This is the 6th year of the rebuild since they fired Lovie.

Angelo let the team get old and Emery/Trestman tried their damndest to destroy the remainder of the franchise, it felt like.  Pace did not hit the ground running with Kevin White but has been pretty solid so far drafting and looking back at this past draft, I will say he did really well to put us in position to have a break out year.  Got cap room and I have a feeling this offseason will be the year a big name ends up in Chicago... if we could get a trade down in the first, of course if Minkah Fitzpatrick isn't on the board that is... all those QBs being jammed up to the top of this draft could land us with a nice juicy trade...

I completely agree Bama. When he drafted Mitch and then did everything he could to keep him on the bench, my first thought was that he planned on 2018 being the year he worried less about building depth/developmental and started looking more to immediate impact players. As you pointed out, he has been growing our cap space, with Mitch and the new coaches, Pace should be able to get a few top FAs.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-bears-offensive-line-decisions-biggs-20180127-story.html

During a three-block walk late Tuesday night, a college scout who has studied Alabama extensively, discussed the pluses of Crimson Tide wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

He compared Ridley favorably to the Raiders’ Amari Cooper, a former Alabama star, and reminded me the program hasn’t had a quarterback who is an asset for wide receivers. Essentially, he said there’s nothing to not like about Ridley.

The scout stopped in front of his hotel and said, “I get why you’re asking me about Calvin but I think the Bears will draft a lineman.”

******

One of the first things general manager Ryan Pace must do is make a decision on the future of left guard Josh Sitton, who was a team captain in 2017. He has a team option for 2018 that must be exercised between Feb. 9, five days after Super Bowl LII, and March 9, five days before the start of the new league year. Sitton is due to earn $8 million with a $7.4 million base salary, $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses and a $100,000 workout bonus — but only if the team picks up the option.

Next, the Bears will need to determine if they want to pay a $1 million roster bonus to right tackle Bobby Massie on March 16 when they will be three days into free agency.

******

The Bears wouldn’t necessarily need to replace Sitton with a guard if they choose to move on. There’s an internal debate over whether Cody Whitehair is better at center or guard and that could play a factor. The team could slide Whitehair to left guard and fill the vacancy by signing a center or drafting one.

*****

The Bears are committed to left tackle Charles Leno after signing him to an extension in August and Massie remains a relative bargain in relation to his experience at $5.84 million in the final year of his contract.

*****

Perhaps the scout is right and they wind up going with a lineman in the first round. That seems more likely if they move on from Sitton.

*****

Long article but a good read and brought up some things to ponder as we see this off season unfold.

It's not my money but a 1 million dollar roster bonus to Massie makes me go:

I agree Papa, I don't know how they could justify spending that much on Massie. I don't see his production as difficult to upgrade. Hell, a 1st round rookie should be able to at least match his efforts.

Have you both forgotten JaMarcus Russell? or Mills? Massie needs to be replaced no doubt, but there are worse out there.

Not really a fan of picking a guard in the top 10 of the NFL draft but this is kinda a big time wow play... sees the free rusher and has the ability to switch sides and get to him before he gets to the QB... Quenton Nelson moves well...
