Rodgers to be the highest paid player in the League

Packers working on deal for Aaron Rodgers that likely surpasses Garoppolo’s

Posted by Charean Williams on February 27, 2018, 9:30 PM EST

Jimmy Garoppolo‘s perch at the top of the pay scale isn’t going to last long. The Packers are making “progress” on a new deal with Aaron Rodgers that surely will make the Green Bay quarterback the highest paid in the league.

Packers president Mark Murphy told ESPN on Tuesday that General Manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball are involved in talks with Rodgers’ agent.

“We’ve had discussions with his representative,” Murphy said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “I have a lot of confidence in Brian and Russ and Aaron as well. We want to create a win-win.”

Rodgers became the highest-paid player in in the NFL when he signed a five-year, $110 million extension in 2013, but he has outplayed that deal. Rodgers now ranks sixth, with Garoppolo recently having signed the league’s richest deal, getting a five-year, $137.5 million contract with the 49ers.

Rodgers, 34, threw 13 touchdowns and three interceptions and had the Packers off to a 4-1 start when he broke his collarbone in a loss to the Vikings on October 15. The two-time league MVP, who returned to start a December 17 loss to the Panthers, becomes the favorite for comeback player of the year in 2018.

I hope they sign Aaron to a deal that will not be surpassed by another during the contracts lifespan. Meaning, do not sign him to a dollar more than Garropollo, sign him to a deal way over that to insure it stays the highest deal! I mean ask any Packer fan and they will tell you he is the greatest. So come on Green Bay, put you money where your mouth is!

$35M per year for 6 years with $100M signing bonus! Get 'er done!

I fully endorse paying Rodgers up to and over 50% of the teams salary cap.

Yes sign that big contract!

Then take your mind off football, and spend every waking moment with Danika Patrick!  ( Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

And making commercials. Hopefully he can feel good about keeping those coming.

...........and don't forget in addition to this the pack will still owe Bennett some small change to add to the math.

The Packers would like to extend quarterback Aaron Rodgers before looming free agents like Kirk Cousins and Drew Brees sign their next deals. Rodgers, who patiently has been waiting for a new contract, is content to wait a little longer.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that Rodgers wants to wait for Cousins to sign a new contract before signing a new contract in Green Bay.

It’s a smart approach by Rodgers, who has two years left on his current deal at an average of $21 million per year. Cousins likely will nudge the highest paid ever bar a little higher than its current mark of $27.5 million, and Rodgers will then have a target for his next deal.

The most intriguing aspect (at least for me) of the next Aaron Rodgers deal will be whether Rodgers surpasses Cousins’ average in new money or total value at signing. Guys like Cousins and Garoppolo are signing contracts from scratch, so their new money will match the total value. Rodgers could easily become the highest-paid player in new money, even if the total value of the deal at signing comes in under the Garoppolo or Cousins numbers.

Rodgers should insist in being the highest paid in total value at signing, which would entail throwing out the last two years of the contract and doing a deal from scratch.

I like that Rodgers wants what we want. To cash strap his franchise! Yeah! Go Erin, get that money now!

McCarthy, another overrated Head Coach! He has ridden Rodgers all these years and has but one SB to show for it. I do not know how many one and done's in the post season.

Granted I would trade the Bears record for those, almost annual, appearances in the play offs! But those had more to do with Rodgers single-handedly willing that team to win. Than it did with superior Coaching getting them there.

Yeah, I am surprised McCarthy is not kissing Rodgers ass. Instead it almost seems he is doing everything he can to put Rodgers in his place. It never really seemed those two got along that great. Would love to watch the drama of them cat fighting for credit.
