Ex-Bear Freeman announces retirement from NFL

Larry Mayer Bears Senior Writer

Former linebacker Jerrell Freeman runs down a play against the Falcons in 2017.

Former Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman on Wednesday announced his retirement from the NFL.

Freeman, who turned 32 on Tuesday, signed with the Bears in 2016. He led the team with 127 tackles and seven tackles-for-loss despite serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Freeman then suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the 2017 season opener against the Falcons and was placed on injured reserve. He was then suspended a second time last Oct. 30, this time for 10 games for again violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Freeman joined the Bears after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts following a three-year stint in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He originally entered the NFL in 2008 as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans, but he was waived before the start of the regular season.

On the first series of Freeman's NFL career in 2012 with the Colts, he intercepted a Jay Cutler pass and returned it four yards for a touchdown in an eventual 41-21 loss to the Bears.

"I will be retiring from the NFL today," Freeman announced on social media. "My health and my family are my top priorities. I wanted to thank all the coaches and teammates I have played with over the years; you have impacted my life more than you'll ever know!

"I want to thank all the amazing and passionate fans that I've been able to play in front of and interact with. I also want to thank the NFLPA, NFL and the CFL. I've been blessed to come from an undrafted free agent from UMHB (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor), to playing for some of the most amazing organizations.

"Thank you Bears, Colts, Roughriders, and yes even the Titans (where I only had enough time to grab a cup of coffee, haha) … you will always be like family. It's been a long and rewarding journey, thank you to all that came along for the ride!!"

Recently Retired LB Jerrell Freeman Received 2-Year Suspension

May 14th, 2018 at 4:45pm CST by Sam Robinson

Suspensions dogged Jerrell Freeman during the latter portion of his career, and although the former Colts and Bears linebacker announced his retirement earlier this month, any attempt to reverse course will likely be difficult after the league handed out a rare suspension last week.

The NFL suspended Freeman for two years on Friday, NFL reporter Howard Balzer tweets. While the cause isn’t specified, it’s safe to assume another positive test for performance-enhancing drugs caused it.

Freeman already incurred a four-game ban in November of 2016 and then was slapped with a 10-game suspension in October 2017. A third positive test triggers a two-year suspension, according to the NFL’s PED policy.

The 32-year-old inside linebacker played four years with the Colts and two with the Bears, having signed a three-year deal with Chicago in 2016. But Freeman only played in one game last season, with the suspension and a chest injury keeping the veteran off-ball ‘backer off the field. The Bears released Freeman in February.

Was getting ready to post the same article, I completly missed you had already done it! I wonder if he intentionally took banned drugs this time knowing he was going to retire? I always hate not knowing what they get popped for.

This is also probably one of the reasons the Bears took so long to remove him from their roster. He was said to have been let go in February, but was still listed on the roster up until he announced his retirement.

I wonder if the Bears were waiting to see how this was all going to shake out?

This may very well be the case. If the Bears knew he was going to retire, they just waited for him to do that. It may have well had Salary Cap implications. If he retires it probably affects his cap hit. I have know idea what his contract looked like, if there was any monies owed or not.

What might he have to gain by doing that?

Getting healthy. I am sure there are treatments out there that are not approved by the league. If he knew he was going to retire there is no reason not to start down that path. Or maybe he hoped to appeal the use of something and decided that they would say yes or he would retire.

My point is that so many of these articles paint these guys as drug users. That is not always the case, I wish that they would be more open as to what they were taking so we could have a clearer picture.

Gotchya......... for some reason I thought you were implying something of a more sinister nature, but I couldn't think of what it might be.
